First Daffodil!

Submitted February 4, 2015 at 5:30PM

It's official! The first daffodil is blooming at Red Butte Garden, soon to be followed by many others. You can find it on the north side of the Four Seasons Garden.

Rijnveld's Early Sensation Daffodil   Narcissus   'Rijnveld's Early Sensation'

Of the 145+ cultivars of Daffodils planted at Red Butte, this cultivar is usually the first one to bloom.

Snowdrops    Galanthus nivalis

These darling little nodding flowers were actually the first bulb to officially bloom here. Some were seen poking their buds through the snow a few weeks ago on the Floral Walk.

Amethyst Witch Hazel   Hamamelis  'Amethyst'

Found on the west side of the Fragrance Garden, this dark-flowered shrub slowly unfurled its delicate petals this week.

Kramer's Red Winter Heath   Erica x darleyensis 'Kramer's Rote'

These vibrant pink flowers brighten up the shade at the bottom of the Great Wall.

While you're admiring the Winter Heath, don't forget to look at the Great Wall closely. There you will find a patchwork of colorful lichens covering almost every rock.

Now that the first Daffodil is open, it won't be long until the other bulbs follow suit all over the garden.
