Herbs for Utah Gardens

Gardening Information


Most herbs do best in full sun and prefer well-drained soil. Many are native to Mediterranean regions and like a hot dry climate, perfect plants for Utah. Once established, perennial herbs need little additional water. Some perennial herbs that are good garden plants are Lavender, Sage, Thyme, Tarragon, Oregano, Lemon Balm, and Mint. Mint can be invasive and should be planted in containers. Rosemary another great perennial herb is only perennial in our climate during milder winters. The variety 'Arp' is the most cold hardy of all the rosemaries currently available.

Basil is a wonderful annual herb that is very tender and should not be planted until after the last frost. Annual herbs need more water that perennial herbs.
