On Monday April 28th Red Butte's Naturalist Faye Rutishauser, discovered a plant right here in our own natural area that hasn't been seen in the Salt Lake area since the late 1940's!!! Beckwith's Violet (Viola beckwithii).

"This handsome violet has been displaced largely from its range in Utah by housing subdivisions and commercial developments." - Stanley L. Welsh.

While we're on the subject of the Natural Area here are a few more shots of some current bloomers up there.

Dwarf Cryptanth Cryptantha humilis

Capitate Waterleaf Hydrophyllum capitatum var. capitatum
