Winding Down

As winter creeps closer and closer, the plants in the Garden are going deeper and deeper into dormancy.

Korean Barberry   Berberis koreana

The fruits of this Asian barberry, hang on the branches long into winter and provide food for hungry birds.

William Penn Barberry   Berberis x gladynensis 'William Penn'

Although evergreen, this barberry - like all evergreens - loses a portion of its leaves each year, but before doing so, they put on quite the show.

Summer Wine® Ninebark   Physocarpus opulifolius 'Seward'

These leaves are deep maroon all summer, but before they fall, turn shades of red and orange.

Trifoliate Orange   Poncirus trifoliata

The bitter fruits of this cold hardy citrus are often made into marmalade, and the rind can be candied.

Southern Cattail   Typha domingensis

This Utah native can be found growing around the Water Pavilion pond.

Winter will be here before you know it, so while the weather is still nice, take some time to walk around the Garden before everything is under a blanket of snow.
